Hello friends!
Gardening can be an expensive hobby. I should know! On saying that, it’s super therapeutic and good for the soul, and there’s always ways around it. My philosophy is that I will happily invest in the best quality compost and foods for my plants, but I won’t spend too much on containers. As long as the plant is healthy, what does it matter? Besides, you don’t need to spend that much cash to have lots of beautiful, happy plants. I said it can be expensive, not it is. Here are a few ways that I’ve recycled in my indoor gardening and saved quite a few pennies!
FREE PLANTS
Want a free plant? ‘Course you do! What a silly question. Next time you buy a pineapple, instead of throwing away the top, pop it in a pot of compost. My mum told me about this a long while ago, and now, every time we buy a pineapple, I rescue to top! Give it a try! Be patient and, in time, it will grow roots and become a whole new, snazzy looking plant!
And why not exchange plant cuttings with a friend? Spiderplants, moneytrees, and cactus are all super easy to grow from little cuttings.
RECYCLED TAKEAWAY COFFEE CUPS
Coffee takeaway cups make really awesome flower pots! Just poke some drainage holes in the bottom before you plant anything. They look kinda cool and unusual, which I like.
They make great mini greenhouses, too!
MINI GREENHOUSE
I got a plastic, see-through container at the pound shop and poked some air holes through the lid. It’s perfect for growing cactus and succulent cuttings, and I saved about £20. Win!
KEEP YOUR ORCHIDS
I’ve kept orchids for quite a while now. But I heard something awful the other day. Apparently, a lot of people just throw their orchids away after they flower. I’ll tell you what, I had a mini heartattack when I heard that, and I’m here to urge you not to do that, because with a little TLC, your orchid will flower every year! Just be kind to it, and it will reward you. Orchids are not cheap to buy, so don’t throw away something that’s doubly valuable when looked after!
So…
What do you think of these tips? Have you tried any of these ideas, or would you try them out?
Namaste,
